The weeks between mid-December and late January are peak season, many properties set minimum-night stays over Christmas and New Year, and the best-located spots are often booked out months in advance. New Year’s Eve in Byron is best approached as a relaxed, community celebration rather than a big fireworks spectacular. A few things worth knowing:

In recent years Byron Shire Council has hosted Soul Street, a free, alcohol-free New Year’s Eve street party on Jonson Street and Dening Park with live music, roving entertainment and activities for kids.   • No fireworks. Byron Bay does not stage a public midnight fireworks display, so plan your evening around dinner, music or a beach sunset instead.
  • Alcohol-free zones. The town centre and beaches are alcohol-free zones, and these rules are actively enforced over New Year’s Eve. Enjoy a drink at a licensed venue instead.
  • Ticketed events. Pubs, bowls clubs, hotels and restaurants around town run their own New Year’s Eve parties and dinners. These usually sell out, so book ahead.

Beating the summer crowds

Byron is busy over the holidays, but a few simple habits make a big difference:

  • Go early. Beaches, cafés and the lighthouse track are at their best before 9am.
  • Leave the car. Parking in town is limited and paid over summer. Walk, cycle or use local transport where you can.
