A trip to Byron isn’t complete without a morning walk to the famous lighthouse and we recommend getting in early to park at Wategoes beach (but just note there is 20 minutes of beautiful uphill trekking if you choose this option). The Cape is a great vantage point for the resident dolphins or a spot of whale watching as the humpbacks pass by on their annual migration.
If that hasn’t satisfied your nature needs, Julian Rocks National Park is a small island off the mainland that is both part of the iconic vista, and an incredible place for scuba diving adventures.
After a busy morning getting out and about in nature, we recommend slowing down, enjoying a massage, and then taking it easy into the afternoon with a spot of people watching while you enjoy good company of your own.
Brunswick Heads
A trip to Bruns can be hatted-restaurant fancy, or as simple as fish and chips on the beautiful riverbank paired with a paddleboard or throwing a fishing line in with the kids.
This former sleepy fishing village retains its small town charms, but with the Pacific Highway bypass of 20 years ago, the town has transformed to modern day Bruns boasting a cracking restaurant scene, along with vintage boutiques and a number of quality pre-loved shops to be explored.
Some things never change in Bruns; Torakina beach remains a firm family favourite, and if a bit of live music is your thing, a Sunday session at the Bruns Hotel is hard to beat...
Bangalow
When our team were growing up this was a town famous for its annual billy cart derby. And then a restaurant opened. And then another...
Word has been out for some time, and modern day Bangalow is a haven for trendy boutique shopping, antiques and all manner of cafe culture. A trip to the Byron region isn’t complete without getting up into the hills, and the heritage streetscape of Bangalow is packed with charm to aim at for a visit.
If staying in the Byron Hinterland, have a look at the proximity as well, as your morning latte needs could very easily lead you in this direction (we all should be so lucky!).
Mullumbimby
The Byron region has been known for alternative culture since the days of the Aquarius Festival, and Mullumbimby is the town that perhaps best embodies the regions progressive personality.
Mullum - as it is known by the locals - is an eclectic mix with a famous weekly farmers market and it’s own unique cafe culture, being accentuated in recent times by luxury accommodation and day spa openings.
While in Mullum turn the navigation on and it is about a 30 minute drive out to Minyon Falls. These spectacular falls are the region’s largest and are part of the Nightcap National Park.
There is plenty of parking and a lookout from the top offering spectacular views (which is where the parking is located), with the option of walking down the track (13km return) for those keen on a hiking experience.
