The Byron Bay Hinterland: Day Trips to Bangalow, Federal and Beyond

Byron Bay’s beaches get the postcards, but ask anyone who knows the area well and they will tell you: the hinterland is the soul of the place. Fifteen minutes inland, the coast gives way to rolling green hills, rainforest pockets, waterfalls and a string of villages each with its own personality. Here is how to explore them.

Bangalow

The hinterland’s heritage jewel, just 15 minutes from Byron. Bangalow’s main street is lined with century-old shopfronts housing boutiques, galleries, providores and some of the region’s best cafes. Come hungry, browse slowly, and if you can time it, visit on the fourth Sunday of the month for the Bangalow Market — or any Saturday morning for the farmers market in Piccabeen Park.

Bangalow also makes a wonderful overnight base. Bangalow Stay and Spa offers a garden retreat with its own spa, the Bangalow Heritage Cottage pairs village charm with an infrared sauna, and Nova Escapes – The Strand is a heritage apartment with a verandah overlooking the main street, made for couples.

Newrybar

Tiny, postcard-pretty and famous for one very good reason: Harvest, the celebrated restaurant, bakery and deli that anchors the village. Pick up wood-fired bread and picnic supplies, then wander the antique stores.

Federal

Deeper into the hills, Federal is a one-street village with a devoted following, largely thanks to its legendary Japanese eatery and the rolling farmland drives that get you there. The road from Byron through Coorabell is one of the prettiest in the shire.

Clunes and Eltham

Quieter still, these villages reward aimless exploring — old butter factories, roadside farm stalls and country pubs where the conversation comes free with the beer.

Waterfalls and Walks

Pack swimmers and walking shoes. Minyon Falls plunges 100 metres over rhyolite cliffs in Nightcap National Park, with a wheelchair-accessible lookout near the car park and a half-day return walk to the base for the adventurous. Killen Falls, near Tintenbar, is a shorter walk to a swimmable plunge pool beneath a curtain of water. The Nightcap and Goonengerry national parks hide dozens more trails among ancient rainforest.

A Suggested Day Loop

Leave Byron after breakfast and head to Bangalow for coffee and a wander. Continue to Newrybar for provisions, then wind through Coorabell to Federal for lunch. In the afternoon, drive into the Nightcap ranges for Minyon Falls, and circle home via St Helena Hill for a sunset view back over the coast. Total driving: about 90 minutes, spread across a perfect day. More itinerary ideas live on our planning page.

Stay a Night (or Three)

The hinterland at dusk — mist settling over the hills, birdsong winding down — is worth more than a day trip. Browse our hand-picked hinterland and village stays on the accommodation page, or search all stays in the region here.
