48 Hours in Byron Bay: The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Forty-eight hours is not long in a town that runs on slow time — but plan it right and a Byron weekend delivers beaches, hinterland, long lunches and at least one moment you will be describing to colleagues on Monday. Here is your hour-by-hour plan.

Saturday

7:00am — Arrive at the Beach

Drop your bags and head straight to Clarkes Beach for a wake-up swim, or grab a board if the banks are working. The water before 8am is Byron at its purest.

8:30am — Breakfast in Town

Byron takes breakfast seriously. Pick a cafe on or just off Jonson Street and order like you mean it — our eat and drink directory has the shortlist.

10:00am — The Lighthouse Loop

Walk the Cape Byron track while your legs are fresh: through the rainforest at The Pass, down to Wategos, up the stairs to the most easterly point of mainland Australia, and on to the lighthouse. Two hours with photo stops, dolphins likely, whales in winter.

1:00pm — Lunch and a Lazy Afternoon

Reward yourself with lunch back in town, then do precisely nothing on Main Beach for two hours. You are on Byron time now.

4:30pm — Golden Hour

Walk north along Belongil as the light goes soft, or claim a patch at the western end of Main Beach for the sunset drum circle and that famous pink hinterland sky.

7:00pm — Dinner

Book ahead for Saturday night — the good rooms fill. Modern Australian, izakaya, coastal Italian: Byron’s kitchens cover it all.

Sunday

7:30am — Market or Mission

If it is the first Sunday of the month, the Community Market takes over the town centre — allow two hours and an empty tote bag. Otherwise, drive ten minutes south to Broken Head for the Three Sisters track and a swim at a beach most visitors never find.

11:00am — Into the Hinterland

Point the car at Bangalow, fifteen minutes inland. Browse the heritage main street, coffee in hand, then loop through Newrybar for providore supplies.

1:00pm — Long Lunch

Finish the trip the civilised way: a long hinterland lunch in Bangalow or Newrybar, views of green hills, no rush whatsoever.

3:30pm — One Last Swim

Back via Tallow or Wategos for a farewell dip. Leave with salt in your hair; it is the rule.

Where to Stay for a Weekend

For 48 hours, location is everything — stay central and walk to all of it. Hotel Marvell puts designer rooms a stroll from both the beach and your dinner reservation, while Basq House offers boutique calm in the heart of the village. Weekend Tips

Book accommodation and Saturday dinner before you arrive. Park the car once and walk — the town centre is small and parking is not. And if you can stretch the weekend to Monday morning, the Tuesday-you will understand.
